Self Adhesive Vinyl And Types

Vinyl is the most versatile plastic and is widely used across the world. It is not natural and is a synthetic artificial material made by man. It is a type of plastic that is formed by combining chlorine which is found in common salt and ethylene which is usually found in crude oil. When these are, combined together in a certain ratio, PVC which is known as Polyvinyl chloride resin is formed. Generally known as vinyl.

Vinyl was first invented in 1920 by the scientists who want to produce an element which can be used in making everyday products. Thus, a material that is durable, cheap, long lasting and easy to make than the product or material used at that time. In fact, now vinyl has become the second most manufactured as well as sold plastic all across the world. Even though vinyl is mostly used in construction work for the purpose of flooring. There are other industries like sign industry where vinyl is used particularly for making banners, vinyl graphics, floor stickers, vinyl stickers and vehicle graphic. Vinyl is also used in printing and publications.

Vinyl has certain unique properties like durability, strength, humidity and moisture resistant and can be manufactured in a wide range of colors to give an attractive appearance. Vinyl is extremely environment friendly as it can be easily recycled. As approximately 57% of vinyl is formed from common salt, which is a, natural renewable substance, and 43% of crude oil, which is non, renewable material. There is also another alternative available if crude oil runs out; vegetable oil can be used as a substitute. Here, different types of self adhesive vinyl are listed below:

Cast Vinyl

Because of this type of vinyl, contours, curves and position of the material do not return to its original flat position. Vinyl is used is used as vehicle wrap, which is applied, all over the contours of a vehicle.

Polymeric Vinyl

This vinyl has generally a bond life of up to 7 years. Moreover, this vinyl is less prone to shrinkage and usually comes with an adhesive which is solvent based that keep the moisture enhancing the bond life. Although general vinyl signage should be normally made up with polymeric vinyl of sound quality.

Monomeric Vinyl

It is the cheapest of all the self adhesive vinyl and has a bond life of up to 3 years. This vinyl has the capacity to shrink with the passage of time and generally comes with a water based solvent which limits the bond life. Most of the promotional stickers are made up of Monomeric vinyl as life expectancy needs not to be more than 1 year.

Vinyl is further processed so that it becomes more rigid, clear or colorful, thin or thick, flexible and semi liquid. It is widely used in construction or building products, appliances and electronics, medical uses, transportation, water infrastructure, packaging and in making toys. There are different types of vinyl available for producing different products namely, reflective vinyl, fluorescent vinyl, translucent vinyl and metallic vinyl.
